When In The Lone Star State (2023)

Sixteen years ago I photographed a long-term photo project about the Texas Hill Country. It was shot entirely on medium format film and was the first long form photo-essay I ever produced. It’s the same size and scale as my previous photo book In-A-Gadda-Da-England and is the second in a series of photo books from my archive. The book was succesfully crowdfunded in November 2022 and is now available for purchase. Amazingly the book is the collection of the Amon Carter Museum of American Art, although I am not American (I nearly was, but that’s another story) the work was seen as significant enough to be included in their archive.

...it’s one of the best books on America by a non-American I’ve ever seen.


Reading my copy of Ed’s ‘When in the Lone Star State’. Incredibly moved by the photography and personal and warm captions running through the book. What an absolute pleasure it is to appreciate the generosity of spirit and humility that guides his photography. 

Full of wit, tenderness and empathy, it reminds me of Lee Friedlander’s book, ‘American Musicians’. I’m going to relish looking at this time and time again, finding inspiration on every turn of the page.
